Cultivating Wisdom in Sisterhood
By Dominique Dawson
Cultivating Wisdom in Sisterhood is part of our Restoring You, Restoring Us series through The Giveback Campaign, an annual invitation to create even more places for black women to rest. We welcome guest contributor Dominique Dawson as she shares her reflections on sisterhood in leadership.
“In the same way, wisdom is sweet to your soul. If you find it, you will have a bright future, and your hopes will not be cut short.” -Proverbs 24:14 (NLT)
Tell us about the season you are in: I have had some major transitions in my work and personal life. My community and “go to” people have changed and there was a gaping hole left for me. Grief has shown up when my hopes and desires for my life suddenly shifted without my permission or expectation.
This season has been rough.
In what ways has sisterhood supported your leadership during this season? In this season, I am grateful to have a mentor to guide me through this part of life. Nina (my mentor/coach) has been such a blessing for me! Having someone who knows what it is like to be in the spaces I work in as a Black Woman, with years of experience, wisdom, expertise and kindness to share is a gift. Having a mentor reminds me that it is not “all on me” and that the Lord will send you [community] to help you figure [life] out.
What words of encouragement can you share that have been a lifeline to you? Wisdom built on the knowledge of God’s word applied to life’s ups and downs over time is a precious gift and is sweet to my soul. We are not meant to be solitary creatures and having other Black Women in my life that lift my eyes to Jesus and share their wisdom with me is an encouragement and necessary for my growth.
What do you have to say to Black Women who are walking through a similar season? Cultivate Vibrance exists! It reminds us that we are not alone, there is a community of other Black women that want you to flourish and will point you to Jesus. It is the gift that keeps on giving.
